Computer Requirements and Recommendations
Laptop or Desktop
There are a number of places on campus where students with laptops can
connect to the Hollins network as well as the internet. You are encouraged to
bring a laptop (preferred) or personal computer with you. Laptops
provide the convenience of portability and take up less space in
the dorm room.
Wireless or Not
Laptops with a wireless network card can
connect to our network in the dorms and most academic buildings. If a student brings a
wireless access point to use in their dorm room, it must be registered through
the Helpdesk.
Software
Hollins University uses Windows XP Professional
and Office 2007 Professional in the labs. We
will be selling Office 2007 Professional Plus at checkin for $100.00.
Recommended Computer Hardware Configuration
The computers in our labs do not have 3
1/2 floppy drives. Therefore we recommend that students use
a jump drive (flash drive) to move files between our network and other
locations not on the network. We plan to sell jump drives with
the Hollins logo at check-in.
PCs
|
Windows XP Professional or Windows Vista (Business, Enterprise
or Ultimate editions, not Home editions)
Windows Millennium and Windows 98 or older are NOT compatible with
our network and are not supported by our helpdesk.
Windows 2000 is no longer supported on our
network. |
