| At forty-six years
old I started college for the very first time in my life after having
been a hairstylist for thirty years. I am a studio art major and
creative writing minor at Hollins University in Roanoke Virginia. I am
also in the Batten Leadership Institute Certificate Program. I am part
of the Horizon Program for non-traditional students at Hollins which is
a nurturing support group of peers and mentors that include other
students and, staff and professors. I volunteer extensively with this
group as I feel strongly about older women having the opportunity of an
education if they desire one. My motto is always "You
deserve to
gift yourself with an education"
and "It is never to late to have a happy childhood!" Involved
in oil painting and writing before I arrived at Hollins, the skills I am
attaining here will only make me that much more successful at them when
I finish. The experience at college is definitely more challenging at an
older age but exceptionally rewarding. I have never looked back. I decided to take this class because of the interview and writing process involved and knew my people skills would aid me. Interviewing people is what I did for thirty years when they set in my chair for cuts and as seventy percent of my clients came to me for twenty or more years, it was a very long interview process, indeed. Also, I chose Andrea Krochalis specifically for her background in social work as I am very involved with the Roanoke Rescue Mission and intend to be even more so upon graduation from Hollins. I am writing a memoir about my life having survived a violent childhood. Our first assignment was to write a five page narrative of our life which was a challenge for me to write a condensed version when I am in the process of writing a long narrative. It is included for those that might be interested.(Longer Life Narrative) The transcripts are lengthy but for anyone that is interested in social work or how local governments operate in this arena it is packed with valuable information.
