Author's notes: When I sent an email and asked Dr. Lykes if there were any projects that she were working on right now regarding to helping others, I was so surprised with her answer, because I thought: Being a DEAN at a big college may keep her busy enough with all the work...but I was wrong.
Dr, Lykes: ...PERHAPS I would say, making change, but it is making change in ways, at least i hope, That will enable others to help themselves - i am a big believer in the saying That it is better to teach a person how to fish than to give them a fish for Dinner - so, i am working on the ignacio martin-baro fund for mental health and Human rights (www.martinbarofund.org) which supports small grassroots Organizations seeking to rebuild community and life in the wake of war and State-sponsored violence; i helped start the group 15 years ago and remain an Active member -as a fundraiser, publishing a newsletter, and helping to partner With groups in guatemala, haiti, el salvador, the philippines, etc. i am also Working on a project with local immigrant groups, protesting deportation and Collaborating in action research to support families whose members have been Deported. It's called the ruby slippers project and coordinated through the Center for human rights and international justice (www.bc.edu/humanrights) here At boston college. we also have several other projects on migration. finally, I am working to protest the involvement of psychologists in interrogation Processes at abu ghraib and guantanamo where there has been documentation of Torture - and protesting more broadly the role of the us government in torture. I have worked for many decades with survivors of torture and i know the Exceptional toll on individuals, families and communities and i am horrified That the us not only has engaged in supporting regimes abroad wherein Governments have tortured their citizens but we are now involved in torturing Individuals who we are holding without protecting their rights as prisoners And/or sending them to third countries where we know they will be tortured - and We deny this. I am also trying to organize within the american psychological Association to get them to develop a stronger ethical policy prohibiting Psychologists from engaging in such activities. These are just several of my PROJECTS AT THE MOMENT.
Author's notes: Thank you Dr. Lykes
inspires me "not being lazy" when I am tired. I used to think I was a
multi-tasks, busy person, and a hard worker...but now, I think I am able to
handle more work.
