MESSAGE TO YOUNGER GENERATION
(01:31:15)Hieu: And what will your message to young generation?
Brinton: Well,…..I am encouraged by the young generation. I …um….I …..It’s critical for me to be surrounded by young people. Because ….I DO think that …there is something about being young, ….and not having mortgage, not having children, not having being…parents….not have …..Some young people do have those things, but most young people don’t, or many young people don’t. …..THAT allow you to take risks and to be BOLD, and to ENGAGE the world.
Hieu: Yes! Dr. Lykes. BUT… for “I”… for “ME”….NOT for others…..that ‘s the concerns I have…..
Brinton: YES! I think you’re right! I think there is a huge …..I think there is a real difference in the world today in addition to the facts that we are absolutely part of global community in a way that wasn’t true when I was your ages. WE are……there are a lot of anxiety about getting a job, anxiety about living a good life that one parents didn’t ….parents manage…..discipline. So the parents…..Um…there a lot of ….pressure….whether twelve years old… limit… to have the latest sneaker, or you’re eighteen years old to have a latest automobile …or you’re twenty five years old and to have a nicest house in the suburb. I don’t know…whatever it is…. would constantly embedded ….BUT FOR ME, the ..media of (unclear……) to the consumer society, it’s a part, it’s a symptom of the problem. And it got to be also challenge ….and that not my strength. I am not a media critic… but ..you know …one had to be a critical of media, one had to be a economic system …that have been criticizing or the gender patriotical system, or the racism I have been criticizing ……the media can serve the interest of the people are concerned the interest of money and power and it has elected to serve the interest of money and power…AND that’s what construct the desire to earn ….I EXPERIENCED my self. I come back from living in Guatemala, and I go into a supper market, ….and I am living in a world community…I am NOT living a Guatemala city, you can’t have this in Guatemala city….I GO…TO supper market, and I feel overwhelmed, I feel confused. Why do I need SIXTEEN different Serio boxes?

Brinton: How do I figure out what Serio I like …I have NO idea…..SO what do I do? I am good academic, I start reading the labels, I …looking for something healthy, SO I SPEND….take me three four times to the supper market….I finally …think...this is the perfect Serio…I like them the way its taste….. healthy….got whatever
(1:34:15) ....yady..yada…etc…..so next time I come back it’s NOT on the shelf anymore. AND I want the Serio THAT I have determent that was the best serio……SO what happen to me? My desire has been constructed…I have gone from being overwhelmed sixteen serio boxes to demanding that the supermarket…carry…my serio… box …..Now I am not be happy…now what do I do? Getting my car …I go to another store and find the serio I want. I don’t just take different serio. SO….IT happened to me too. I am not just somebody over here ….who…you know…..that desire to consume destructed in me …DO I need THREE different vests…NO I don’t …I could have one vest….and wear every day. But do I have three vests. Yeah! I have three vets. WHY?... because ….the students tell me……do you wear that same thing…...the last time you wear in class….OR my colleague tell me you’re going to represent this school and x,y,z place… ..You should….so…ah… I am NOT. I can’t …per seem….I can’t extract my self from that process. And one of the things about life is recognizing with humanity. That we are always part of the problem, unless we just situated our self …just part of a solution. And it’s very difficult to constantly be situated your self part of solution, because you have to understand what the problem is. And there are multiple challenges that we face. And we are always. ..those of us who are driven by a vision, and a mission and a set of goals…that are egalitarian and aspirations and are organized around … PUSHING for social justice. WE HAVE TO acknowledge with deep humility… that we also live multiple contradictions in our own life.

Brinton: And we are not …it’s impossible to be pure. Because if….you’re a pure… you have to …..persin….you have to take your self out of …mustiness (unclear…???) to every day …of life. …
Hieu: You know……If the leader whoever out there , the highest power in this country just has a similarity what you just said…people’s lives ‘re going better.
