About The Process

I must start out by saying that I am not an Anthropologist.  I am just a student (a Freshman, at that) and I have much, much more to learn.  I apologize if any of this site is not up to standards.

I took this class because, well, I thought it looked interesting (and it fulfilled a lot of requirements).  It was certainly not easy, as it ate at least half of my semester.  But I don't think I have ever learned more from a course.  I learned certain research and interview methods used by Anthropologists, of course, but I also was given the opportunity to better know Vince, a man who has been cheering me up and and watching over me since my first day at Hollins.

I have learned so much from Vince and I hope that others who visit this site will take away some of the warmth and goodness that radiates from this man.

Both interviews were conducted in the Green Room of the Hollins University Theatre.  The interviews were tape recorded and then transcribed (the results can be seen on the pages for the first and second interviews).  On one hand it was a little intimidating having to ask someone that I already knew on one level to tell me his life story; on the other hand it was a relief to interview someone that I already knew.  Any awkwardness that I felt during the first few minutes of the interviews was quickly swept away by the seeming ease with which Vince related his story.  He went to great length to tell me the details of his life and to make me feel comfortable when he was the one doing me a favor.  I will forever be grateful to Vince for letting me hear of his life, for helping me with this class, and for being who he is.

Sincerely,

Ashley A. Miller, '05
