This is the result of two interviews with Chief D. J. Carlson of the Hollins University Department of Campus Safety. This is his story pretty much as he told it to me... I've removed the verbal pauses, but have left the places where my interaction in the process showed up on the tapes, I've done no rearranging of the order of words. I feel very fortunate that Chief Carlson agreed to be interviewed for this project... I couldn't have found a better person to work with at this point in my life. I went into this class thoroughly excited - though admittedly overwhelmed by the amount of work involved. But in mid-February I learned that a dear friend of mine and his new wife - Alan and Terra Bates had been murdered. Much of the time spent in the Anthropology class at Hollins focused on discussions of how the interviewer impacts the interview process. This was not good news in my new state of mind. I was already having a difficult time with conversation, and became increasingly uncomfortable with the idea of even approaching anyone to schedule the first interview. But Chief Carlson immediately put me at ease and made my experience more pleasant than I could have imagined. I soon lost myself in his stories and am incredibly grateful that he was willing to share so much with me.
