The process...

The process was a lot harder than the actual interview. What we had had to do was read various readings to show different approaches on how to get life narrative. By seeing the different approaches we got to see the different results and how they varied. The most demanding part of the process was transcribing the tapes. Rewriting everything that was spoken, gestured, the tone and emotions such as laughing, coughing, and talking real fast. The took a very lengthy amount of time, but after hours and hours of cramped hands, broken rewind buttons and heavy eyelids, the transcript was done, and it felt like the biggest accomplishment. The editing process was almost as hard as the transcribing. I had to decide whether to keep it in improper English, and whether to edit out the ums and uhs. I had to figure out how I wanted the person I interviewed to be seen, how they wanted to be seen, and prayed to God that they wouldn't edit the whole interview after I spent hours upon end transcribing it. I have to say that in the prospective of some other stories I've heard, I was really lucky, and Miss Louise couldn't have been more cooperative, especially with the editing.
