“What was that noise?” asked senior Kathryn Herndon as she emerged from her creative writing class in Turner.

Next door, Student Government Association was making a great noise to announce the results of the election for officers for the upcoming school year. A group of about ten current SGA Roundtable members gathered on the steps of the Cocke Building for the traditional singing of results.

As the students sang the results they were joined by their new members. The election results were not cut and dry, despite the fact that several candidates ran unopposed.

Only three elections were opposed: Appeal Board Chair, Honor Court Chair, and SGA Treasurer. Of those three races, two resulted in a run-off that will be voted on tomorrow. Honor Court nominees Vinson Simpson ’06 and Julia Henderson ’06 and Appeal Board hopefuls Kiki Toner ’06 and Dyanna Fincher ’07 will face off tomorrow in the run-offs.

In other elections, Rachel Banger ‘06 was the new Academic Policy Chair, replacing Emily Abeles ‘05. Sarah Parkington ’06 replaced Sarah Gerber ’05 as Student Conduct Council Chair. Sarah Poulton ‘06 was re-elected as SGA secretary and Meg McFerren beat out Fred Whiteman ’07 for SGA Treasurer.

Elections for the two highest positions, SGA President and Vice-President, were unopposed. Christine Jehu ’06 replaced Lisa Bower ’05 as vice-president, and Bethany Ewing ’05 was replaced by Gwen Fernandez ’06.

Students present at the singing were mostly excited about the news.

“I think all the winners will do an excellent job in their positions,” said Megan Culp ’07. “They were all deserving.”

Anna Moncure ’07 agreed. “I think with the winners, we’re going to continue taking SGA in a positive direction.”

However, some students were not happy about the choices, or rather, lack thereof.

“I’m happy for all the winners, but I wish there had been more choices,” said Elizabeth Bartenstein ’07. “I think Gwen will do a good job as president, but I wish there had been more than one person running. And the people that actually did have more than one person running were all run-offs, so…,” she trailed off.

“The most important thing is for everyone to go and vote tomorrow so the elections can finally be finished,” said Elizabeth Pless ’07.

The event was primarily attended by current SGA members and the hopeful candidates accompanied by a few supportive friends. The entire event was over in ten minutes, making it a loud, but short-lived noise.
