And the winner is! Announced on the steps of the Cocke Building were the winners of the elections for class officers for the 2005-2006 school year.

While Candice Dalton took president for the class of 2007, with Julia Knox working with her as Vice President.

“I’m not going to say who I voted for, but I think she will get the job done,” said Molly Fair ’07.

Turnout was normal this year, many students voted on their way in and out of lunch and dinner. As usual though, not everyone eats in Moody all the time.

“Having elections held in Moody doesn’t allow for a great turnout because a lot of the campus doesn’t even bother eating there,” Elisabeth King ’05.

According to Kyrie Henderson as of a few minutes until 5pm the juniors hadn’t met quorum yet. Which means that not enough people voted for the vote to count requiring there to be another vote tomorrow.

“Half of the juniors are abroad though, so I don’t expect it to be and outstanding turnout from them,” Henderson ’06 said. “I expect they will reach quorum at dinner tonight though.”

The first-year turnout was outstanding. According to Henderson they voted more than the sophomores, but as Henderson added, “It’s rare that the sophomores make quorum as early as they did.”

Just by looking at the ballot for the Class of 2007, it was obvious that there was not as much enthusiasm. Running for class president was Candice Dalton and Brittany Addison. The candidates for Treasurer and Vice President ran unopposed.

“I wish our class [2007] was only half as enthusiastic as the first-years,” said Krystle Rae Hunt ’07. “It has a lot to do with the fact that most of our class is going to be abroad for half the year so no one really cares.”

Some students decided to check the ‘no vote’ box for reasons of political rebellion.

“I think it’s stupid to vote for people to vote for their friends rather than for someone who’s going to get the job done,” said Melissa Meyers ’07.

No matter the reasons for casting the ballot or rebelling against the system, all of the Hollins women had the opportunity to express their right to choose a class officer.

There will be a runoff vote Tuesday, April 12, 2005 for the postions of class of 2007 president. The winners of the runoff elections will be announced on the steps of the Cocke Building tonight at 7:30pm.
