"8 Minutes of Black"

A group experience

Research and notes from my notebooks

An Untitled Work
Begins with an opening
A street block of everyday people
A clearing, opening to a window
Invitation
Text of body, text of mind
Kinetic language, physical language
Who am I in your reflection?
What about our relationship defines me?
What will translate through the body?
By being just this one, and is over by ending only as one.
Solitude, Autonomy, Independence, Freedom, alone, loss

What happens when all of these people are stuck on one block together?
How do relationships change?
We start with one common language.
5 phrases, the one thing we all know.
Developed from watching traffic patterns and reading The Little Book of Weather.
Start with a storm and finish with the calm.
Needing space and losing the space someone just occupied.
Group improvisation
Knowing yourself only in relation to other peoples choices, decisions, moves.
Action and reaction
Do you build and create the situation for them, or do you come upon it like a clearing in a forest?
Are you a dictator?
Do you tell people what their reactions are or do you let them have their own reaction?
Think for yourself. Think for themselves…
Form and sculpt around the experience, not by preplanning it.
Intimacy and Domination.
The space in between tells the story.
An odd number is left.
Who is constantly getting left out?
Susan…..
Is this unavoidable?
Groups will always form.
Know yourself in relation to yourself, not in relation to others, and to the way you think others see you.
Headphones
Getting dressed
Video images…
Waves
Waves of time, history, personalities, situations, relationships, human, existence.

  dance notes

These are notes from my graph paper notebook.

On the left page there are ideas for the next rehearsal, ways to take apart what we had at this point, and create new routes that worked better.

A lot of this process took place in my imagination, I would imagine what comes next, and then try it in rehearsal.

On the right page there are drawings I did of people's different pathways at different times in the piece.

I often diagramed the movement like this to see the patterns in a 2 dimensional surface and to get another perspective.

Notes from Junior year notebook.

These are the first ideas for the piece, before there were even any dancers to help realize it and make it live. Little did I know it would all change dramatically!!!

These notes are more conceptual, just things I was thinking about at the time.
