My process with Nathan...I chose to work with Nathan never having seen his work, only hearing his story of working with the Hollins women before I came to Hollins.
I knew I wanted something physically challenging and transforming in the complete opposite of what PEAL is to me.
Nathan’s movement was pretty foreign to my body, I had never been asked to move like him, to move my arms and fingers so articulately.
Nathan’s quickness was challenging and contagious at the same time.
I enjoyed the process of working with him, as an artist myself I often cherish the process of making the art more than performing the art.
One of the most important elements of Nathan’s work was time; letting the piece settle in my body and transform throughout time and space.
Things we talked about: feeling, vulnerability, long arms, taking up space, moving through space, creating a story, rebirth, coming from the womb, emotion.
Quickness, lightness, exactitude, visibility, multiplicity, and consistency, the six elements Calvino describes, were combined and transformed in a completely different way for me.
