Women in the Roanoke region want targeted, effective leadership training. In response to that call, the Batten Leadership Institute at Hollins University launched the Certificate in Professional Leadership program in October 2006. This transformational program provides important and practical leadership training for women through a flexible program structure and schedule that accommodates full-time working women.

Effectively training women leaders requires an understanding of the research about what works in leadership training and development in general and what facilitates women’s leadership in particular. The Certificate in Professional Leadership is grounded in that research, the Batten Leadership Institute’s experience in leadership development, and the needs assessment survey data. It also incorporates assessment, challenge, and support, the three fundamental elements for productive leadership development programs.

ASSESSMENT
Participants gain a thorough understanding of their strengths, skills, preferences and developmental needs through a battery of assessments.

CHALLENGE
Based on their assessment results, participants collaborate with the program directors to design their Personal Leadership Change Project. The directors also work with participants as they engage in the important practice of mentorship. Women enrolled in the program attend at least 10 of 12 monthly late afternoon workshops held at the Higher Education Center. Hollins also offers monthly on-campus Conflict and Negotiation Breakfasts where participants learn the nuts and bolts of effective conflict management and skilled negotiation.

SUPPORT
A signature component of the Certificate in Professional Leadership program is the Feedback and Communications Skills Group. This 8-week series challenges participants to improve their communication skills and gain important insight into how they affect and influence others. In order to provide ongoing support for women leaders, certificate program alumnae will also be invited to join monthly leadership resource groups with their colleagues who have also completed the program. Our valley benefits from the advancement of outstanding women leaders, and we at Hollins want to contribute to that advancement through the Certificate in Professional Leadership’s innovative leadership training program.
