Career Tip-of-the-Month:  Making the Career Fair Work for You!
Career fair season is upon us and it’s time for you to start thinking about what events you would like to attend.  A successful career fair experience is often attributed to advance preparation and making the most of your time at the event.  Follow these helpful tips as you prepare:
Have a plan and research the companies and the jobs in which you are most interested prior to the event and visit their booths first.  Also identify employers that you would like to learn more about and visit their recruiters to learn about potential opportunities.
Determine your expectations of the career fair.  Setting realistic expectations and realizing your goals leads to a fulfilling experience.
Have copies of your resume printed on good quality paper and a portfolio to carry your documents.
Practice and know your introduction.  “Hi, I’m Sara McClintock.  I’m a junior at Hollins University majoring in photography and English and I’m interested in learning more about the internship opportunities with your company.”
Know what you’re going to wear!  This is a professional event so plan to dress accordingly.  A conservative suit (pants or skirt) with a blouse and jacket or sweater set is a good start.  Select a moderate heel shoe and minimal jewelry.  We want the focus to be on your skills and qualifications when speaking with employers, not your outfit.
Display a confident posture and maintain eye contact.
Schedule a mock interview and practice your interview skills.  Contact the Career Center to schedule your appointment time.
Attend our fair workshop, Making the Challenge Job Fair Work for You on Tuesday, October 30 or Wednesday, November 7.
