(Posted 04/03/08)

Hollins University, a nationally recognized liberal arts institution in Roanoke, Virginia, seeks an assistant/associate (depending on experience and qualifications) director of the Batten Leadership Institute (BLI).  Since its founding in 1842, Hollins has been a leader in undergraduate liberal arts education for women.  In 1958, the institution began offering selected coeducational graduate programs.  Hollins attracts distinguished faculty and talented students, and prepares graduates who successfully enter a wide range of professions.

Created in 2002, the Batten Leadership Institute is an umbrella organization that offers an undergraduate Certificate in Leadership Studies as its core program.  The institute also has two ancillary branches focusing on community programming for high school and professional women, as well as a consultancy program.  Built on rigorous curricular, cocurricular, and professional development opportunities focusing on personal, interpersonal, and intellectual development, the goal of the institute is to establish Hollins as the premier university for women and leadership.  Guided by the philosophy that leadership cannot be separated from the individual, the institute helps each student in the Certificate in Leadership Studies program to develop her potential through personal growth.  The executive director, assistant/associate director, Batten chair in the history of women and leadership, faculty members from across the curriculum, and the BLI Program Council work collaboratively to provide students with this unique leadership opportunity.  For a more in-depth description of the Batten Leadership Institute, please refer to http://www.hollins.edu/campuslife/batten/batten.htm

Reporting to the executive director and working with the Batten chair, the assistant/associate director of the Batten Leadership Institute is responsible for the ongoing development, implementation, and assessment of the new undergraduate Certificate in Leadership Studies.  The assistant/associate director teaches core courses in the certificate program, including a communication skills group, participates in the Batten Scholars competition, and develops and implements high school summer leadership camps.

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.  The appointee is expected to assume the position July 1, 2008.  Applications should include a cover letter; curriculum vitae; salary requirements; and names, e-mail addresses, and phone numbers of three professional references.  Nominations and expressions of interest should be sent via e-mail as MS Word or Adobe PDF attachments to hollinshr@hollins.edu with the subject line, “BLI Search.”
