Assessment Inventories

Strong Interest and Skills Confidence Inventory explores the relationship between interests, skills, and career/educational planning. The Strong customizes information on personal styles in work, learning, leadership and risk taking, and provides steps a student can take to identify and evaluate career and educational options.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator explores the diverse ways that people prefer to direct their attention, process information, make decisions, and adopt varied life/work styles.

Career Advising and Counseling

The staff of the Career Center will meet individually with students regarding career questions and concerns. Walk-in appointments are available Monday-Thursday, 2-4 p.m. with other appointment times available as needed.

Career Advising Network is comprised of Hollins alumnae, and sometimes friends and parents, who are willing to speak with students and graduates about their career interests and answer questions about the job market in their particular cities. They serve as “advisors” and are not expected to find anyone employment. There are times when CAN advisors can make job referrals, but it is solely at their discretion. Students are expected to observe this protocol when making contacts.

Students and graduates can request a list of alumnae who work in particular occupations in specific geographic areas. Visit the Career Center to make this request in person.

Graduate and Professional School Preparation

Information on graduate and professional schools in the U.S. and abroad; special sections on business, law, and medical schools; exam preparation materials, including practice exams and information sessions with KAPLAN Test Prep.

Internships

Students can earn up to 16 academic credits by completing internships. As many as 250 students intern during Short Term, and many also complete internships during the semester or summer. Companies indicate that up to 75% of new hires may come from previous interns, making the internship experience an important component of the Hollins experience.

Challenge Job & Internship Fair is sponsored annually by a consortium of eight area liberal arts colleges and universities. It is designed for seniors and juniors to explore careers and specific companies. Seniors can also schedule on-site interviews. 

The Alliance of Virginia College Career Services maintains a database of internship opportunities and sponsors conferences and events that support all aspects of career development and lifestyle issues.
