Confused About Usernames and Passwords?

Below is a brief description of what how usernames and passwords are created and how to manage them. If you have questions, please call the Help Desk at x7777.

Passwords, in general, must contain at least six characters, can be a combination of letters and numbers, cannot be used more than once, and cannot be anything commonly found in a dictionary.

Microsoft Network Passwords

By default when new accounts are created, the username consists of the last name followed by the first and middle initial.  (example:  James R. Harrison would be harrisonjr).  Passwords are initialized to your 3 initials followed by the last 4 digits of your social security number.  These should be changed immediately when you start to use your account.

Under the Windows 2003 operating system you change the network password as follows:

Press the Ctrl Alt Delete keys simultaneously. This will bring up a window with an option to Change Password.  Click on it.  Enter your old password.  Enter a new password.  Enter the new password a second time in the Confirm New box.  Click OK.

If your password expires or you forget it, call the helpdesk at x7777 (362-6538 from off campus) and request to have it changed.

Banner Passwords

Administrative staff members who use certain areas of the Banner system will use a second password while in their user accounts to access Banner. This password is set by Administrative Computer Services. If you have any questions about this password, please call the Help Desk at x7777.

Blackboard Passwords

Blackboard (our course management system) user names and passwords are the same as the network username and passwords.  To have your password reset, call Ellen Witt at x6020.

Faculty and Staff Email Passwords

Your username and password for Outlook and Outlook Express are the same as your network username and password.

NOTE!
If you are using Outlook Web Access and Windows 2003, on the Username line, you must enter the domain and the username as follows: hollinsnt\username

Passwords to faculty and staff accounts must be kept confidential. If a user is found to have shared her/his password, the account could be closed and email privileges denied. The password to your account allows access not only to your email but also to the Hollins computing system at large, making it vulnerable to hackers. Your account password expires periodically. 

Student Email  Passwords

Students access email from the my.hollins.edu portal.  Login to the portal with your network username and password.  If your password expires or you forget it, call the helpdesk at x7777 (362-6538 from off campus) and request to have it changed.
