Some of you may be posting material on
Blackboard which is set to open in a new window. If you do so, users will
have to do one of several things to see the content if they have set
Internet Explorer to block popups. Microsoft has recently released Service
Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP machines as a critical update. The update
includes changes to Internet Explorer. SP2 provides a Pop-up Blocker by
default. Unfortunately, many applications including Blackboard use this
functionality. Internet Explorer allows you to modify the setting of the
Pop-up Blocker to allow pop-ups from specific applications. You can use this
feature to enable pop-ups in Blackboard.
You have several options. I recommend
Option II or III.
I.
Turn off the Pop-up Blocker
temporarily
- Open Internet
Explorer.
- On the Tools
menu, point to Pop-up Blocker, and then click Turn off
Pop-up Blocker.
- Users should
remember to turn the Pop-up Blocker on again when
they are finished.
II. See the blocked content
without changing the Pop-Up Blocker settings
-
Hold down the Ctrl key
when you try to open the blocked content. This works when you are trying to
access an assessment that opens in a new window.
III. Change Pop-up Blocker settings
for Blackboard only.
- Open Internet Explorer
- On the Tools menu, point
to Pop-up Blocker, and then click Pop-up Blocker Settings

To see pop-up windows from
Blackboard, type http://bb.hollins.edu
in the Address of Web site to allow box, and then click Add.
