Alternative Media |
|
For this assignment you will work in groups (assigned below).
Each group must complete a brief video, a web page and a zine. In each, you will demonstrate that you have learned about the strengths and limitations of the specific medium, but you must also demonstrate that you have explored the concept of alternative media. For each individual media project, you must also create and hand in a rationale, explaining what it is about, why you designed it the way you did (e.g. the formal characteristics of the video, the layout/design of the zine and web page), why you view it as alternative based on a working definition of alternative media, and what audience you are directing it at (e.g. are you "preaching to the choir," or are you trying to attract/engage people unfamiliar with what you want to express?). Finally, all members of the group will evaluate one another on level of participation in the project.
Video
This should be 30 seconds to three minutes (MAXIMUM!!) long. The "package" for the video must include a cast & crew list that designates who did what, and copies of scripts, etc., if appropriate. One of the other groups will be assigned to assist you with operation of studio technology. Because you will have limited in-class time for the actual shooting of this segment, preparation and rehearsals must be done in advance, on your own time.
Web page
The web page must incorporate the following: A cover page, which serves the purpose of drawing people in; several graphics; internal links/bookmarks; external links; and one or more tables used to organize the pages, the graphics, the links and/or other information.
Zine
Produce a cover and the first 2-3 pages of a zine. You must have a title, and the title and the content (articles, stories, cartoons, comics, etc.) must be consistent. with the mission of the zine as stated in the rational.
