Statuette of Aphrodite

Dimensions: H 44.2cm W 20.5cm
Material: Marble
Provenance: Athens, Parthenon
Current Location: Basel, Antikenmuseum
Statuette of Aphrodite rests her left elbow and lower arm upon a pillar or tree trunk. Only the horizontal upper edge is visible in frontal view. Her weight is supported by her right leg. Her left knee is bent and her left foot is slightly advanced. Her right elbow is bent and the forearm seems to have been extended. She wears a belted chiton buttoned along the length of her upper right arm. Her chiton seems to have slid off her left shoulder down to her elbow, leaving her left shoulder and the top of her left breast exposed. The ends of the chiton are wrapped around her left elbow and falls into swallow tail folds.
The Statuette of Aphrodite exhibits remnants of the Archaic ideal showing sensuality through the fully draped figure.
