Hope and future for me are not in lawns and cultivated field, not in towns and cities, but in the impervious and quaking swamps.

Interests and Hobbies

I enjoy anything that takes me outside. Luckily, our property which is 25 miles north of Hollins abuts the George Washington National Forest. We count our neighbors on four legs (bear, bobcat, deer and raccoons to name a few) and on wing (too many species to list). We have over 10 miles of trail which winds through our hilly woods which I run nearly everyday. Students in Ecology and Animal Behavior usually have an opportunity to do some field work near my house |

My son Caleb, 4.5 years old, keeps us occupied. He knows our woods better than me and knows Hollins better than many students. |

Though originally a birder, I have become completely engrossed with the diversity of life in the Appalachian mountains. As such, much of my free time (which is limited) I spend wandering the woods, learning to identify species of all nature and understand their amazing stories. |
