Brief Biography

Rev. 03/19/2002

Bill Nye is a native of Connecticut, but has resided in Southwest Virginia since 1975.  Bill holds a BS in biology from Tufts University and an MA and Ph.D. in sociology from the New School for Social Research. Currently, he is Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology at Hollins University, a private Liberal Arts institution devoted primarily to the undergraduate education of women. Bill is also the Director of the Hollins-duPont Diversity Initiative, a comprehensive diversity plan serving the needs of all constituencies making up the Hollins community.  Dr. Nye’s main teaching and research interests focus on problems and issues pertaining to race, class and gender. Nye has published extensively in professional journals, reference works and periodicals. Nye is a member of the national team of facilitators serving the programs of Healing the Heart of Diversity (www.healingtheheart.org). He also serves as a program evaluator for T.A.P., the umbrella poverty agency serving Virginia’s greater Roanoke Valley.  In addition to his duties as a sociologist, Nye plays the jazz saxophone on a professional level. He currently heads the Bill Nye Quartet and performs with other ensembles as opportunities present themselves.  Bill and his wife, Judy, live on a small farm in Floyd County. Their blended family boasts of five children, five grandchildren, three cats and a dog.
