Hollins University Media Services

Mission

Media Services strives to integrate the latest instructional technology through Hollins University’s campus. To meet these needs, we provide faculty, students, and staff access to all necessary tools as well as instruction and staff support when it is needed.  We also assist departments in the selection and purchasing of audio-visual equipment.

Hours of Operation

Monday - Thursday: 8:30a - 9:00p
Friday: 8:30a - 4:30p
Saturday, Sunday*: 12:00p - 6:00p

*During our posted weekend hours we will be open only to check equipment in or out.  In order to be open either Saturday or Sunday for equipment set ups, audio-visual assistance, or videotaping, we will need to be notified two weeks in advance.

Audio-Visual Requests

To best meet the needs of the Hollins University community, services and equipment have been divided into routine requests and special requests for classroom A/V support. To make a request, Call x6569, email media_services@hollins.edu, or visit the department office located on the ground floor of the Wyndham Robertson Library and speak with one of the staff members.

Routine Requests

All routine requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance (excluding weekends) and will include:
Multimedia projectors
Laptop computers
VCRs
DVD players
Televisions
Overhead Projectors
Boom Boxes

Special Requests

Special requests must be made at least two weeks in advance and include:
Dubbing
Live Sound
Audio Taping
Video Recording
Television Production Assistance

Resources

Media Services is located on the ground floor of the Wyndham Robertson Library.  This department is home to the Jackson Screening Room, the Jessup Media Commons, and the Morten Television Studio.

The Jackson Screening Room is a theater with a ten-foot screen and Internet connections for its 40 seats. The media that is available in this theater includes VHS, DVD, and Laserdisc, as well as laptop input into the LCD projector.

The Jessup Media Commons is a fully functioning work space, including a video-editing suite featuring non-linear editing stations.

The Morten Television Studio includes a fully functioning, sound proof, three-camera studio with adjacent control room.

Media Services also has an inventory of video cameras, digital cameras, laptop computers, projection systems and audio equipment that are available for use to students, faculty, and staff of Hollins University for up to three days at a time.

Many of the Hollins University classrooms also contain multimedia devices such as computer projection, VCR/DVD players, televisions, and overhead projectors. If your classroom does not have the technology you require, requests for equipment and services can be made from Media Services.

Media Services is no longer responsible for the Media Library, a collection of over 4,500 titles in DVD, VHS, and Laserdisc formats. However, it is housed within the department of Media Services. Wyndham Robertson Library student assistants, not Media Services student assistants, will be available to check out these titles to patrons. Media Services is in charge of the Johnston Multimedia Suite in which there are many stations set up for viewing films on VHS, DVD, and Laserdisc formats.

Use of Services

As mentioned above, Media Services requires advance notice of services to best meet the needs of the Hollins University community. This advance notice enables us to most effectively staff events, as well as provide all necessary equipment. Every effort will be made to honor all requests, though this will be based on the availability of equipment and staff.

The following paragraphs include more detail about the services that Media Services provides to the campus community:
Dubbing: Those needing dubbing services quickly are welcome to use the Editing Studio to make copies for themselves. All blank media should be provided by those making the request and should be labeled accordingly. Please remember that no dubbing of copyrighted material will be allowed in accordance with Federal Law and the Hollins University Honor Code.
Affiliation with Information: While Media Services staff members are a part of the Information Technology department, the Media Services staff are only in charge of printer maintenance for the library. All other questions concerning computers and printers should be directed to the Information Technology Help Desk on the second floor of the Dana Science Building room 242, x7777.
Editing Studio: The hours for use of the Jessup Media Commons will be posted at the beginning of each semester. Space is available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Students may sign up in advance for a workstation date and time.  Projects cannot be saved onto the hard drives of the editing stations; external fire-wire drives must be used in order to save projects.
Jackson Screening Room: The Jackson Screening Room is completely off limits for private screenings. Due to the expenses these rooms incur through usage, this room will be reserved for classroom and special event useonly. Individuals who wish to view media must use one of the viewing stations in the Johnston Multimedia Suite. Student Assistants in Media Services: Media Services relies on the diligence, reliability, and positive energy of its student assistants. Students working in Media Services will perform customer service, assisting in set-up of audio-visual equipment for classroom usage and events, and will work independently as well as with their co-workers on projects relating to office management.
The duties of Media Services student assistants include, but are not limited to:

Check-out and check-in of audio-visual equipment
Assisting in the set-ups of audio-visual equipment in classrooms and on-campus events
Answering the Media Services phone and fielding the questions of patrons
Maintaining a log of routine request forms and special request forms
Maintaining the online calendar of audio-visual equipment setups for the campus
Following and enforcing the various Media Service policies, including usage of the Jackson Screening Room, the Jessup Media Commons and the Morten Television Studio

Media Services student assistants will not be responsible for sitting in a classroom for the entire duration of a class. Faculty members who experience problems with the technology in their classrooms need to call x6569. The same number should be called in the case of a Media Services-related emergency. There are simply too many needs that student assistants are required to satisfy for the Hollins University community for them to sit in on an entire class period.

Faculty members should also be aware that there is a ten-minute space of time between day classes for Media Services employees to set-up and take-down equipment for classroom needs. We ask for patience as these employees perform their job between classes and events.

As of July 1, 2005, Media Services student assistants will no longer be responsible for the film collection, also called the Media Library, housed in Media Services.  Wyndham Robertson student assistants will be responsible for the maintenance of the Media Library.
