In general, copyrighted materials may be photocopied or digitized for reserves following these standard guidelines.

The Library is an extension of the classroom, therefore all classroom rights apply. 

• Distribution of the same materials does not occur every semester.
• Only one copy is distributed to each student. 
• Material includes a copyright notice on the first page of each item.
• Students are not assessed any fee beyond the actual cost of copying.

In addition, the following guidelines are suggested for multiple copies on reserve.

• The amount of the materials should be reasonable in relation to the total amount of material assigned for one term of a course, taking into account the nature of the course, its subject matter, and level.
• The number of copies should be reasonable in light of the number of students enrolled, the difficulty and timing of assignments, and the number of other courses that may assign the same material.
• The materials should contain a notice of copyright.
• The effect of photocopying the material should not be detrimental to the market for the work.  (In general, the library or faculty member should own at least one copy of the work.)

Library reserves are NOT meant to supercede the need for a textbook that students purchase or a coursepack for which permission is sought and royalties paid when requested.    Reserves may be either assigned or optional readings; in either event they are intended to complement a textbook or coursepack, not replace them.

These additional considerations for Electronic Reserves are met in the processing of materials by the staff of the Wyndham Robertson Library

• Copyright notice is included.
• Students are explicitly instructed against further electronic distribution.
• Access is restricted to the University community.
• Bibliographic access is limited (by course number or instructor’s name).

Materials submitted which violate any of these guidelines will not knowingly be made available by the Library, and instructors will be contacted.

The duplication of works that are consumed in the classroom, such as standardized tests, exercises and workbooks normally requires permission from the copyright owner and will not be placed on reserve.

Items in the public domain may be placed on reserve without restriction;  Please consult with a librarian to determine if items fall into this category.
