French, German, Spanish Placement Tests

In order to take the French, Spanish or German test, you will need to be able to type accented foreign characters.  This page will give you a chance to practice doing that.   Each of the 3 language tests will have a language palette at the top of the page like the one you see below.

II. Using the language palette

   < Language Typing Palette

 To enter accented characters in an answer box, follow these instructions:

1.   Click in the Language Typing Palette (above the accented characters list).

2.   Type unaccented characters as you normally would.  When you want to insert a special character, click on its symbol in the list below the box.  For example to type allée, you would type the letters all, then click on é, then type the final e.

3.    To place the text you have typed into an answer box below, drag across the text to highlight it;

4.   Move the highlighted text.  (To cut text, hold down the control key and press x.)

5.   Click where you want to place the text. (Use the answer box below for this practice session.

6.   Paste it.  (To paste text, hold down the control key and press v.)

7.   On the tests you will repeat this process for each answer that uses accented characters.
